Lawyer Advising Vets Quits Bush Campaign - Update!

Well, apparently someone reads the blog...seriously though, from the Associated Press article:

Ginsberg's acknowledgment Tuesday evening that he was providing legal advice to the Swift Boat Veterans for Truth marked the second time in days that a person associated with the Bush-Cheney campaign had been connected to the group, which Kerry accuses of being a front for the Republican incumbent's re-election effort.

"The sudden resignation of Bush's top lawyer doesn't end the extensive web of connections between George Bush and the group trying to smear John Kerry's military record," Kerry-Edwards campaign manager Mary Beth Cahill said Wednesday. "In fact, it only confirms the extent of those connections."

How long will it take before we find out how much coordination has really been going on here?

Md. Machines Seek Vote of Confidence washingtonpost.com or, Why We're Screwed

hmmm, after the problems in Florida, it was decided that electronic was the way to go. Diebold is almost the exclusive provider of these machines, which strangely enough don't have any backup mechanism or paper trail for votes. Again, strangly, the kind folks who run the Diebold Corporation are very large Republican donors. Not that I'm saying that there's anything going on here, but doesn't it just make sense to have some sort of paper trail on something as important as YOUR VOTE??! Why are they fighting against the idea so hard? And why, BTW, didn't they think of this before they rolled out the new machines? Could it be that having stolen an election one way, they were looking to steal this one another way?

Bush-Cheney Lawyer Advised Anti-Kerry Vets washingtonpost.com

What a shocker! Some highlights:

A top lawyer in President Bush's reelection campaign acknowledged Tuesday that he has been advising the veterans group seeking to discredit Democratic presidential nominee John F. Kerry's military record, an admission the Kerry campaign said is evidence the president's campaign is orchestrating a "smear" by the private group.

On Saturday, the Bush campaign dismissed from its veterans steering committee a volunteer and Vietnam veteran, retired Col. Kenneth Cordier, who appeared in a Swift boat veterans ad. The campaign said Cordier had not previously disclosed his participation with the Swift boat group.

Democrats also said their allegation of collusion was supported by a flier at a Bush-Cheney office in Florida promoting a Swift boat event, and by close relationships in the past between backers of the veterans group and Bush aides such as political adviser Karl Rove.

Now, I'll be the first one to admit that the Dems are doing the same thing. The truth of the matter is that these 527 "non-profit" groups have evolved from geniune interest groups into shells that are controlled by the parties. Campaign finance reform my butt!
